School learns lessons in tattoo safety
Local tattooists have been helping South Bedfordshire District Council’s Environmental Health Team to raise awareness among young people about the possible dangers of getting a tattoo if they use an unregistered artist.
Phil and Heather Bradley from Rising Phoenix in Linslade, and Brent Egglington from Brent’s Tattoos in Dunstable joined council officers at Cedars School in Linslade as part of European Health and Safety Week, which took place last week.
It is a criminal offence to tattoo anyone under the age of 18 and the aim of last week’s event was to ensure pupils are aware of the law surrounding tattoos.
Pupils aged between 14 and 17 years old were told that if they are thinking of getting a tattoo once they reach 18, they should ensure that the premises they visit displays a registration certificate from the council’s Environmental Health Team. If it doesn’t, it means the owners may not keep their equipment sterile, clean their needles properly to stop infections or dispose of their waste appropriately.
Jonathan Judd from the council’s Environmental Health Team said: "If premises are not meeting the high standards required of them, you could be subjecting yourself to danger, possibly contracting hepatitis B, C, or D or HIV which can lead to AIDS. This can occur through a lack of basic infection control procedures, the re-use of disposable needles or needles that have not been properly disinfected. The use of unclean needles can result in tattoos becoming infected causing them to go septic.
"The council has controls in place to monitor the cleanliness and safety of premises that are registered. If we become aware of anyone operating as a tattooist who is not registered we will take action to make sure they either do so, or discontinue their work."
Heather Bradley from Rising Phoenix said: "My advice to anyone who is thinking of getting a tattoo is be careful where you go. Look for the premises certificate of registration and ask to see examples of their previous work."
